Sideoats Grama

Bouteloua curtipendula · Texas State Grass
Sideoats Grama

Sideoats grama got itself named the official Texas state grass, and for once the committee was right — drought-proof, prairie-tough, with little seed 'oats' hung along one side of the stem like laundry on a line, catching the light and the breeze. It also raises skipper butterflies on the side. The native grass to plant in a drift. 🌾

The official state grass — little seed 'oats' hung to one side of the stem, all leaning the same way like they're listening for something. Prairie-tough, and it moves in the wind the way the whole prairie used to before we paved most of it.
