There is a comfortable lie in this industry, and it goes like this: someone walks a property with a four-dollar probe from the garden center, watches a needle wobble toward "neutral," writes a number on a clipboard, and calls it a soil test. It is not a soil test. It is a guess wearing a lab coat. The number is real in the sense that the needle moved, and useless in the sense that no reviewer, no council, no agronomist would stake a dollar on it. We separate the two on purpose, and we tell you which is which, because the difference is the whole point.
A Noon site read has two tiers. The field tier is what we read on the ground with calibrated instruments — honest, repeatable, fast, and good enough to design from. The lab tier is the proof: a sample sent to an accredited laboratory, with a documented method behind it, that you could hand to a grant officer without flinching. The field tier tells you what's probably true. The lab tier makes it defensible. Confuse the two and you've built your case on sand.

The first tier.The field read.
The field tier is what we measure on site, with our own hands, the day we walk the property. Done right, it's enough to design from and enough to set a working baseline. It feeds two things: the property's Sensorial Choice Score — the at-a-glance read of where the land stands — and the property's Land Record, where the numbers accrue over time. The gear is not exotic. It is calibrated, which is the only thing that matters.
Here is what rides in the truck:
- A calibrated pH / EC / temperature meter (the Apera PC60 — a 5-in-1, not a hobby probe). This reads the acidity, the salt load, and the soil temperature in one go. The garden-center wobble-needle reads none of these reliably. A lab-grade handheld, calibrated against buffer solution before you trust it, reads all three close enough to act on.
- An Oakfield-style soil-sampling probe (the field tool that doubles as the lab sampler). It pulls a clean vertical core to a consistent depth, which is exactly what you need both to feel the soil structure on site and to collect the sample that goes to the lab. One tool, both tiers.
- An infiltration ring (water soak-rate — the drainage score). Drive the ring, pour a known head of water, time how fast it disappears. That number — inches per hour into the ground — is the drainage score, and on caliche sites it's usually the difference between a bioswale that holds and one that overflows.
- A soil moisture / temperature meter (the profile's current state). Whether last week's rain is still in the root zone or already gone. It tells you what the irrigation plan is actually up against.

The second tier.The lab.
This is the proof. When a number has to survive someone who is paid to doubt it — a grant reviewer, a council, an agronomist — it leaves the property and goes to an accredited laboratory.
For soil, that lab is the Texas A&M AgriLife Soil, Water and Forage Testing Laboratory in College Station. It is the standard of record for Texas soils, and a report on its letterhead is citable to a grant or a council without apology. Here is what it costs, and what you get:
- The Routine analysis is $12 per sample, and it now includes pH, the big three nutrients — nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium — plus salinity basics and boron. For most residential and design-build work, this is the workhorse.
- Add-ons run $19 to $89, depending on what the site demands — micronutrients, texture, organic matter, lime requirement.
- The Routine + Detailed Salinity package is $47. It reports the saturated-paste figures — calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium — along with conductivity and SAR, the sodium adsorption ratio. That is the sodicity picture, and it's exactly the read a caliche site needs before you spend a dollar amending it.

Soil is one thing. Water is another. When the question is runoff quality or what a bioswale is actually catching and releasing — the kind of number that ends up in a stormwater or watershed claim — soil-lab work won't carry it. Here is the honest part, said plainly: it is this tier — an accredited lab plus a documented method — that makes a number defensible. Not the field meter. The meter gets you moving. The lab gets you believed.

Everything above is true, and most of it is not your job. The AgriLife lab is the standard of record in Texas, and its website was built for agronomists, not homeowners. It tells you to collect and ship the sample before you pay for it. It offers a dozen-odd test combinations and no opinion on which one your yard needs. It hands you a result in milliequivalents per liter and wishes you luck. None of that is hard, exactly. It's just a tax on people who didn't go to soil school.
So we pay it for you. When you book a site read, the lab tier is not a homework assignment we leave at your door — it's something we run end to end. You never open the A&M site. Here is the whole of it, from your side:

The protocol.
Instruments and a good lab are necessary and not sufficient. What turns a pile of readings into something that counts as science — rather than vibes with a decimal point — is the protocol around them. Ours is short on purpose, because a protocol you can't follow every time isn't one.
- Composite sampling. Ten to fifteen cores per management zone, at a consistent depth, mixed into one representative sample. One core is an anecdote — it might have hit an old fence line or a dog's favorite spot. A composite is a measurement.
- Calibrated instruments, calibration logged. Every meter is calibrated before it's trusted, and the calibration is written down with a date. A reading without a calibration behind it is a rumor.
- Anything that leaves the property is lab-confirmed. If a number is going to be cited, it came from the lab, not the handheld. Full stop.
- Field readings are tagged. Every on-site reading carries the label "field-observed, not lab-confirmed." We never let a field number wander into a sentence where it can pass for a lab number.
- Every project framed baseline → method → outcome → cost. What the land was, what we did, what changed, and what it took. That's the shape of an evidence record, and it's the shape that holds up later.

Both tiers land in the same place: the property's Land Record. The field reads and the lab report sit side by side, each tagged for what it is, each stamped with a date. That's not bookkeeping for its own sake. It's the thing that makes the data compound.
A single reading is a snapshot. A record is a trajectory. Take a baseline today — soil, salinity, infiltration, the lab numbers behind them — and in three years the same readings, taken the same way, are no longer a claim. They're provable change. The amendment worked, or it didn't, and you have the before and after to say so without raising your voice. All of it lands in the Land Report we hand back — a full read of your ground, in plain English, stamped and dated.
That is what qualifies a property's data for scientific use, for grant reporting, and for standing in front of a city council with empirical results instead of adjectives.
