Marrakech worked out how to make a wall waterproof without a single tile, a single seam, or a drop of plastic — by polishing lime with a stone and washing it with soap. The result is the surface a fountain has been waiting for.
Run your hand around the inside of an old Moroccan basin and you will not find a joint. No grout, no caulk, no tile edge to catch a thumbnail — just one continuous skin of stone-smooth lime, cool and faintly waxy, holding water that has nowhere to seep. That surface is tadelakt, the waterproof lime plaster of Marrakech, and it solves a problem most builders answer with sealant and a prayer. The reaction that makes lime waterproof.
Start with the puzzle. Lime is porous — that is its whole virtue elsewhere, the reason a lime wall breathes and a sealed one rots. But porous is the opposite of what you want in a basin. The Moroccan answer was not to seal the lime from the outside. It was to change the lime itself.
The plaster goes on, and while it is still firm-but-young the worker compresses and burnishes it with a hard, smooth stone — a river pebble, the galet — until the surface goes tight and begins to shine. Then it is treated with black olive-oil soap, the savon noir or beldi soap. Here is the trick: the soap reacts with the free lime — the calcium — in the surface and forms calcium stearate, an insoluble, water-repellent compound. The polishing closes the pores; the soap reaction caps them with something water will not pass. A material that was thirsty becomes a material that sheds.
They did not seal the lime. They convinced it to seal itself — one chemical handshake between soap and stone.
Why seamless is the whole point.
The waterproofing is only half of what burnished lime buys you. The other half is that there are no joints to fail. Tile is a grid of small waterproof pieces held together by grout, and grout is the weak line — it stains, it cracks, it grows mold, it is the first thing water finds. Tadelakt has no grid. It is one jointless field, so there is no seam for water to creep behind and no porous line for mold to colonize. You waterproof a basin not by armoring it in pieces but by making it a single, continuous, hand-burnished surface.
This is why Marrakech put it exactly where water lives: the hammam, the steam bath, where the air itself is wet for hours; the basins and sinks; the bathing rooms of the riad. A finish that survives a steam room is a finish that will survive a fountain.
The history is wet by design.
Tadelakt is not a trend pulled off a mood board. It is a traditional craft long associated with Marrakech, developed in a culture that treated bathing and water as architecture, not plumbing. The hammam was a civic room. The courtyard fountain was the heart of the house. In that world a waterproof, seamless, hand-finished lime was not a luxury upgrade — it was the obvious, correct way to build the rooms where water and people met.
That is the inheritance worth claiming. Not the look of a Moroccan basin, but the logic of it: build the wet rooms out of the same living mineral as the dry ones, and finish them by hand so there is nothing between the water and the stone.

The right skin for a fountain.
This is where tadelakt stops being a Moroccan curiosity and becomes a Noon material. We design and build fountains, basins, and acequias — and a fountain has to do two jobs at once. It has to hold water without failing, and it has to be a thing you want to stand beside. Most waterproofing solves the first job and ruins the second: a fountain lined in pool liner or sealed in epoxy holds water and feels like a bathtub.
Tadelakt does both jobs with one trowel. It is the historically correct, naturally waterproof finish for a basin, and it is beautiful in the exact way a fountain wants to be — soft, deep, hand-made, stone. The lime and black soap behind it are where we source it. The acequia, San Antonio's own water-channel lineage, runs on the same idea: water is not a utility to be hidden. It is the point of the room. Burnished lime is how you finish the channel that carries it.
What a burnished basin does to you.
Here is the part the waterproofing datasheet leaves out. A sealed box gives the senses nothing. Plastic liner is the same temperature as the air, the same flat sheen under every light, the same dead nothing under your hand. It holds water and tells you no more about it than a bucket does.
A tadelakt basin does the opposite. The stone is cool — cooler than the air, so your hand reads it before your eyes do. The surface has a soft, non-glossy glow that scatters light instead of throwing it back flat, the way still water in a stone bowl seems lit from within. It is seamless to the touch, one unbroken curve with nowhere for the hand to snag. And the water itself sounds different against burnished lime than against tile or plastic — softer, rounder, a sound a tiled basin cannot make.
A sealed liner holds water. A burnished basin gives it back to you — cool, lit, and sounding.
That is not decoration.
