Georgetown sits on a seam. The west side rides up onto the Edwards Plateau — shallow, stony dark clay over hard Cretaceous limestone that sheds a storm like a roof. Roll east toward the prairie and the ground deepens into Blackland clay that swells, cracks, and holds water at the surface. And under a lot of the newer master-planned ground — Sun City, the growth out along the corridors — there's caliche cap that roots and water fight to get through.
Cutting through all of it is the San Gabriel. The North and South forks meet here, the river runs over limestone bottom west of the Balcones Fault, and how a property handles its rain decides whether that water soaks in or just sheets off toward the channel. This is fast-growing country with a real conservation streak — the ground rewards anyone who actually reads it.

§ 2 · The local reality
Limestone, clay, and the seam.
Most of the landscaping failures we get called to fix in Georgetown come from ignoring the ground. Sod laid over unbroken Blackland clay that drowns its own roots. A French drain dropped on Edwards limestone with nowhere to daylight. Beds graded toward the foundation. New-build plantings stuck in a caliche cap with no way down. Plants that belong somewhere wetter, not on this seam.
The fixes aren't exotic — they're just specific. Break and amend the clay so it drains. Fracture the caliche so roots and water can get through it. Send the storm to a planted swale instead of the slab — and instead of the San Gabriel. Choose the palette that already knows this heat. Done right, a Georgetown landscape needs less water, less rescue, and less of you every year.
§ 3 · Rebates & water rules
Let the city chip in.
The City of Georgetown's water utility runs an unusually generous conservation rebate program. Its Texas Grown Native Landscaping rebate covers converting irrigated turf to native plants and xeriscape — up to $3,000 a year for residential, up to $5,000 for commercial. There are also rebates for rainwater harvesting, permanent irrigation removal, smart controllers, native trees, and a $75 irrigation check-up by a licensed irrigator. Where a project can qualify, we design it to — and we'll point you to the programs that are live. We never quote a rebate number we can't source.
Do you fix yard flooding and drainage in Georgetown?
Yes — it's one of the most common calls we get in Georgetown. A storm drops inches fast onto Blackland clay that won't take it and limestone that sheds it, so water pools where it shouldn't and runs hard toward the San Gabriel. We read the actual flow path on the property, then build the right fix: a planted bioswale, a regrade, a French drain only where it's truly needed. We're also bonded for work in the street and public right-of-way, so we can take curbside drainage all the way to the source — most landscapers stop at the property line.
What grows in Georgetown's clay and caliche soil?
More than people think — if you match the plant to the ground and prep the soil right. Georgetown sits on the seam: shallow dark clay over Edwards limestone on the west side, deep Blackland clay rolling east toward the prairie, caliche caps under a lot of the newer master-planned ground. We design with Central Texas natives that evolved for it — Texas sage, salvia greggii, damianita, inland sea oats, native sedges, live oak, Texas persimmon — and we break and amend the soil at planting so roots can actually get established.
